Community events

A large and important source of funds raised by YESS is from third party events. These are events that members of the general public - individuals, organizations, youth groups, schools and corporations - organize and implement with the goal of raising funds for YESS.

The types of events are diverse and as unique as the third party organizers themselves! They include but are certainly not limited to holding bake sales, putting on a dart tournament, hosting a BBQ, organizing a rock concert or a break-a thon!! The common thread between all community members who hold third party events to benefit YESS is they want to give youth at risk a chance.

So whether you raise $250 or $25,000 every penny counts and all your time and energy planning every detail of your third party event is valuable.

Here are some great examples of third party event:

"Mr. Kayaker" Carter Buchanan
Imagine you are nine years old. You read stories about other kids who make a difference where they live, and you decide you want to do something for your own community. This is exactly what Carter Buchanan, a young boy in St. Albert set out to do; and what a difference he made. After months of planning, and several weeks of collecting pledges, Carter set out to kayak 9.4 km up and down the Sturgeon River. He set a modest fundraising goal of $300 but raised over $2,021. Carter was supported by his parents, friends and family and Mountain Equipment Co-op. Carter received a lot of media attention including coverage on City TV and Global TV.

5 Days for the Homeless
In 2005, three very inspired U of A School of Business students believed they could make a difference and do something that could raise both awareness and funds for homelessness. A unique fundraiser "5 Days for the Homeless" was born to both educate the general public about homelessness and raise funds for YESS. Year one saw Clark Barr, Rob Hart and Frank Callele sleeping outside on the U of A campus for five nights. They were allowed no disposable income, but were permitted to ask for food and drink donations. In the event of an emergency they could exchange their pillow and blanket for food. The group of three had no access to showers, but still had to attend all of their classes and complete all their academic responsibilities, including student organizations and teaching positions. The first year goal was $1000, but they eventually ended up raising well over $2000. In year two the goal was set at $2500, but a new twist was added with the participation of Sandy Hilton, a chartered Accountant and professor at the School of Business. For every $500 raised, he would spend a night outside with the participants. Sandy’s students managed to raise slightly over $1500 and the professor spent three nights outside. The finally total that year was $5031.70. Most recently in March 2007, James Matsuba, Kendal Harazny and Casey Paulhus undertook the project and, through sponsorships and matching donations, raised $24,000.

Inland, Co-op Taxi and Four Point Sheraton Golf Tournament
Set on the picturestque North Saskatchewan River, the River Ridge Golf Course is home to a wonderful third party event corrdinated by Inland.

Despite unfortunate weather conditions this year the tournament was a great success, raising a total of $2800.00 for YESS!

Dinner was held at the Four Points Sheraton and featured an outstanding buffet. The afternoon was hosted by hilarious Donovan Wokun of Atomic Improv and local comedian and Graham Neil of CTV.

As part of the event, Inland sold mulligans and held a 50/50 draw, which made over $500.00. And, the winner generously donated his share back to YESS.
