How to become a volunteerWhether you’re available early mornings, late at night, during the day or only on weekends, the Youth Emergency Shelter Society will work to find a placement that fits! We offer a wide range of volunteer opportunities to suit a variety of needs, wants, skills and talents, and will work with you to make sure your volunteer experience is fulfilling and rewarding. We invite you to look at the many available volunteer opportunities and select the ones that are appealing to you. Kitchen Assistant: For people who love to cook and play around in the kitchen, helping in the kitchen is right for you. Monday to Friday during the day we need volunteers to help with meal preparation, accepting food donations, sorting food donations, and giving our fabulous cook some new ideas and help while having fun in the very enthusiastic, fun loving kitchen environment. Receptionist: This volunteer opportunity is a very important one as the receptionist is the first link that anyone has to YESS. As we are open 24 hours a day, we need evening receptionists to take and direct phone calls, page staff, accept donations and even maybe do some administrative projects. Some nights might be quieter than others, so you might even be able to catch up with some studying if you are in school or even reading a book. Bingo and Casino Workers: Have you ever thought that volunteering for Bingo’s and Casino’s was boring, well are you ever in for a surprise. Our Bingo’s and Casino’s are a lot of fun; you get to hang out with a great gang of volunteers while exercising (walking around the room). There are normally two Bingo’s per month and one Casino every year and half. So phone us to see when the next gaming activity is so you can come and join in the fun and excitement. Special Events: If you would like to try something new, then this might be the opportunity for you. We have everything from Growing Dreams to Races to Homeless for a Night to Barbeques to Garage Sales to Taste of Edmonton. We are always looking for new volunteers that can only come out now and then to play with us and have fun while meeting other volunteers and maybe trying something new. Please call to see what events are coming up. Youth Support Worker:
Every wanted to just hang out with youths that just need a second chance in life, now is your chance. For this position you get to help the youth make supper, hang out with them and even maybe attend some recreational activities. Depending on which youth program you are interested in, this volunteer opportunity is anywhere between 4:30pm to 11:00pm Monday to Friday and even some opportunity on weekends. All we ask is for you to be 21 years of age or older and willing to commit for a year one day per week.
Put your talents to good use! It’s a shame to let a good talent go to waste! Please let us know if you have any special or unique capabilities… you never know – we may be able to put them to good use!
